Cather’s revisions to The Song of the Lark provide both a study of her revision process and insight into her life.

In 1915, when Cather was 42, she published the first edition of The Song of the Lark. Then in 1937, at age 62, she revised and republished the novel. The two editions were published before and after a significant change in Cather’s life. She reflected on the change, in Not Under Forty, when she wrote: “the world broke in two in 1922 or there abouts.”
